Athletes are remarkable creatures. From a young age they show innate physical ability and continue to hone their skills through years of fierce dedication and hard work. Some go on to become world-class champions, record breakers and gold medalists and experience the kind of glory most of us can only dream of. But with glory comes injury and chronic pain. Pushing through punishing conditions takes its toll and for athletes, it’s what is expected.
And so it is, athletes get hurt A LOT —and turn around and go right back to competing. Eventually walking it off is no longer an option and they must deal with their ailments – everything from torn ligaments to broken bones and everything in between. They turn to doctors and coaches, most of whom inevitably point them down the path to pain medicine.
If taken too long, this practice can turn into over-reliance or over-indulgence; even addiction. It’s clear that professional and collegiate athletes are not immune to these dangers; if anything, they are more susceptible because they get hurt more often.
A Vicious Cycle
An over-reliance on painkillers and prescription drugs is nothing new. In the high-stakes game of professional sports, getting injured has far reaching consequences. Time away from the game can mean losing a position at the top, sponsorship or money– things that loom heavy on the minds of pro athletes everywhere.
It is no surprise that opioids and anti-inflammatories like NSAIDs are the first line of defense for athletes dealing with injury. While prescription medications have their place, there are a host of issues when used too frequently, namely a myriad of side effects and negative interactions with other substances.
Even anti-inflammatories at higher doses/frequency can be dangerous. In fact, the National Vital Statistics reported NSAID deaths as the 15th leading cause of death in the US. The longer-term health effects from anti-inflammatories (like naproxen) and opioids (like fentanyl) are equally grim and include cardiac health issues, kidney failure, and worsening respiratory conditions.
A New Option
Thankfully, many professional athletes and a few of the professional sports leagues around the world have started embracing alternative methods of pain relief like CBD.
CBD, the main non-psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, offers many impressive advantages over standard pain medicine such as no side effects, unusual interactions or risk of addiction – just to name a few.
CBD and other cannabinoids also work in tandem with the body’s own endocannabinoid system to achieve homeostasis, which further increases the body’s ability to recover and heal itself. Here are just a few of the many benefits athletes can expect from using CBD:
Help with inflammation – Inflammation is the most common type of pain athletes experience. CBD has long been associated with both anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive qualities. Several studies show that cannabinoids downregulate cytokine and chemokine production and, in some models, upregulate T-regulatory cells (tregs) as a mechanism to suppress inflammatory responses.
Combat oxidative damage – CBD is a powerful antioxidant-, more powerful than Vitamins C and E. Cannabinoids have long been known to act as free radicals that help protect the brain and body and reverse oxidative injury.
Pain relief and muscle recovery – Pain relief is the number one reason athletes turn to CBD. It’s safer, less addictive and the neuroprotective and antispasmodic qualities help reduce muscle spasms. It also acts as an analgesic, which helps alleviate pain pre and post workout.
Chronic use of pain medication, even over-the-counter pain relievers, can create a host of problems. Not only is this country grappling with an opiate epidemic, but medical science is now uncovering many health risks associated with anti-inflammatories that were previously not known. Professional athletes are right to be concerned as they are one of the groups most susceptible to these dangers. It comes as no surprise that they have started actively seeking alternatives to pain relief and overall wellness, with CBD on the top of their list. (And with good reason!)

If you are looking for a safe, plant-based option to help alleviate the unpleasant symptoms of anxiety, full spectrum hemp oil may bring you relief.
While anxiety is a normal emotion, for some it is much worse. People with an anxiety disorder often feel excessive nervousness, fear, apprehension, and worry, which can spur physical changes such as increased blood pressure.
Even those without an anxiety disorder can experience intense periods of anxiety from time to time. Imagine rolling into work on Monday morning, only to check your email and see that your boss has scheduled an early meeting where you are supposed to present.
In an instant, your cheery Monday morning vanishes. You stare at your computer screen in horror, while your heart starts racing and you feel your stomach drop.
Most of us can relate to this nightmarish scenario, and we’ve all experienced the intense, sudden onset of anxiety when pushed into a tight corner. But, while all of us experience anxiety on occasion, those with an anxiety disorder suffer from persistent, chronic, and excessive anxiety symptoms, regardless of external stimuli.
Fortunately, it is possible to get relief from unpleasant anxiety symptoms with high-grade full spectrum cannabinoids.
Managing symptoms with cannabinoids
Cannabinoids are a series of compounds derived from the cannabis plant species. These naturally-occurring compounds can be isolated and used to alleviate symptoms associated with a variety of health conditions.
In particular, cannabidiol, or CBD, has been shown to reduce anxiety in medical research studies. One study found CBD to aid in multiple anxiety disorders, including generalized panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
CBD is a common choice for relieving anxiety symptoms. Other cannabinoids such as cannabinol (CBN), and cannabichromene (CBC) offer symptomatic relief of sleep disruption and depression.
Full spectrum cannabinoid products from Earth Science Tech
Sadly, not all cannabinoid products are created equal. Earth Science Tech’s products have one of the highest cannabinoid profiles, meaning they contain more cannabinoids than other full spectrum hemp oils on the market.
Many full spectrum cannabinoid products commonly found today only have between 2-4 cannabinoids. Our full spectrum products offer 7 cannabinoids! Having all cannabinoids work together synergistically is what offers the most optimal benefits to the user.
In addition to our rigorous testing and research process, we are also committed to researching the science behind our products. Many companies have only done clinical trial studies, but Earth Science Tech has conducted clinical trials and university studies to ensure that we are always on the cutting edge of CBD science.

Learn what cannabinoid receptors are, why we have them, and why you should care
Consuming cannabis products can have a variety of effects, both mental and physical. But have you ever wondered what causes those changes? Did you know that we all have an internal system, filled with receptors, that regulates these reactions?
It’s important to understand how your endocannabinoid system (ECS) works as a whole to understand what cannabinoid receptors do. Then, we’ll take a look at why all of this matters.
Your endocannabinoid system
We all have an endocannabinoid system that is made up of internally created cannabinoids (endocannabinoids), cannabinoid receptors, and enzymes. Essentially, the endocannabinoids that are produced a bond with the receptors, and the enzymes break them down. Cannabinoids are also present in cannabis products, like cannabidiol (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG), and cannabinol (CBN) to name a few.
The ECS is a biochemical communication system that aims to balance out what’s happening within your body, ensuring that everything is working the way it should. Should something be off balance, the ECS will try to regulate the problem by sending messages to receptors that moderate a variety of bodily functions.
Despite the name – endocannabinoid system – this system doesn’t have anything to do with cannabis. However, cannabis does interact with your cannabinoid receptors, even though cannabis is obviously not why they exist within your body.
How cannabinoid receptors work
There are two main types of cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. These are called G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), because they couple with G proteins and they mediate the different effects of cannabinoids and endocannabinoids, including psychoactive reactions.
These receptors play an important part in your ECS by receiving endocannabinoids and messages that your brain sends out. CB1 receptors are located within your brain, nervous system, lungs, heart, and digestive system, and THC from cannabis will bind primarily to CB1 receptors. That’s why THC can help with things like stomach problems or depression.
CB2 receptors, on the other hand, are located within your immune system, in the spleen, and in your gastrointestinal system. These receptors are activated to regulate things like hunger or inflammation.
Benefits CBD and cannabis products can provide
When you consume cannabinoids from cannabis products, these compounds seek out receptors in your body they can bond with. Once that happens, your ECS starts sending out messages throughout your body, governing how you feel, and regulating how other systems function within your body, like your nervous system or immune system.
We all have different balances and numbers of receptors throughout our bodies, which is why cannabis may affect some people differently than others.
But this is also why cannabis products can actually help people manage a variety of symptoms – those additional cannabinoids can balance the density of cannabinoids that are needed for proper regulation. So, when you ingest cannabis products like CBD, the cannabinoids in your ECS are really just being supplemented. Because the ECS has more receptors for CBD than any other receptor within the body, CBD is especially effective in obtaining a balanced ECS. .
So why should you care?
If you’re not already fascinated by this complex system that is always working within your body, here’s more about why you should care.
Did you know that you had an internal system keeping tabs on these basics of your day-to-day ability to function?
If your ECS isn’t regulating properly, your body won’t be properly balanced, and problems related to these conditions will arise. Issues with appetite, mood, or sleep problems can occur if your ECS isn’t able to stabilize your body.
Hopefully, this information about how cannabinoid receptors work has helped you to better understand why consuming CBD and related compounds impact your body and your experiences.

If you’re interested in CBD, here’s what you should know
These days, it’s impossible to discuss health and medicine without bringing up cannabidiol (CBD). Often touted for its beneficial properties, there is still a lot about it we don’t know. Here we discuss what CBD is and how it may be able to help with an assortment of ailments.
What is CBD?
CBD does not have any psychoactive effects, meaning it doesn’t create any “high.”
CBD is one of more than 100 compounds found in industrial hemp, which is derived from the cannabis sativa plant. It is extracted from the plant in liquid form and used to make full spectrum hemp oil. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the predominant compound in marijuana – CBD does not have any psychoactive effects, meaning it doesn’t create any “high.”
CBD is found in a variety of full spectrum hemp oil products, including creams, capsules, and tinctures. Thanks to the recent Farm Bill, hemp is now completely legal in the U.S.
What medical benefits does CBD offer?
Before we discuss the potential health benefits of CBD, it’s important to know how it affects the body. It is due to our endocannabinoid system that we feel the effects of the chemicals from cannabis. This system has cannabinoid receptors, and it also produces its own endocannabinoids. Unlike THC, which directly connects with these receptors, CBD is subtler.
“CBD increases the circulating levels of your natural endocannabinoids, which, in turn, interact with your cannabinoid receptors,” says Marcel Bonn-Miller, who studies the effects of CBD.
This is why, Bonn-Miller says, CBD may be beneficial for different medical conditions, both physical and mental. And this list could be extensive. Studies have shown that CBD can help with:
Pain and inflammation
Pain is one of the most common reasons why people take CBD rich full spectrum hemp oil. According to a 2011 study CBD – along with cannabichromene (CBC) – “stimulated descending pain-blocking pathways in the nervous system and caused analgesia by interacting with several target proteins involved in nociceptive control.” A study a year later using animals found that CBD “suppressed chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain without causing apparent analgesic tolerance.”
CBD may even work better than some steroids to treat inflammation, says Dr. Bruce Nicholson, director of Pain Specialists of Greater Lehigh Valley. “Some studies also suggest that CBD oil can function as a nerve protectant and treat nerve injury pain,” he said.
Stress and anxiety
There have been several studies showing what CBD can do for stress and anxiety. A 2012 research review of multiple international studies determined that CBD can reduce anxiety, especially social anxiety. In 2014, a study was conducted involving animals and stress as related to the endocannabinoid system. Researchers found that “augmentation of the endocannabinoid system might be an effective strategy to mitigate behavioral and physical consequences of stress.”
Because CBD interacts with serotonin receptors, it may be able to help with depression, particularly depression linked to chronic stress, as this can cause reduced levels of endocannabinoids. After a study in 2016 was conducted on CBD and depression, researchers concluded that “CBD could represent a novel fast antidepressant drug, via enhancing both serotonergic and glutamate cortical signaling through a 5-HT1A receptor-dependent mechanism.”
CBD helps the body turn white fat into brown fat, spurring on weight loss and promoting sugar metabolism and insulin production. In a 2006 study involving lab rats, CBD was shown to decrease the incidence of diabetes in the rodents. In 2015, a biopharmaceutical collective started stage-2 trials related to the use of CBD to treat diabetes.
CBD could help people who have trouble sleeping, says Dr. Sarah Brewer. “CBD is a popular treatment for insomnia, and promotes refreshing REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement – the dream phase) to reduce excessive daytime drowsiness,” she said.
In 2014, a study was conducted with four patients suffering from REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). With RBD, there is a total loss of muscle relaxation during REM sleep, and this frequently results in nightmares. When these patients were given CBD, there was a reduction in the frequency of these events.
We’ve really only scratched the surface when it comes to what CBD can do, but the research is very positive. An important thing to remember is that not all CBD oil is the same. If you are interested in trying it, be sure the product you choose has a full-spectrum extract, as this means it contains more of the compounds and nutrients found in the original plant.
